This article considers the validity of some of the recent criticisms that have been levelled against the basic needs approach to development. These include the allegations that the approach lacks scientific rigour; is anti‐growth and consumption‐oriented; is a recipe for perpetuating economic backwardness, neglecting industry and favouring antiquated technology; is against the New International Economic Order; assumes away class and group conflicts and gives the impression that poverty elimination is all too easy. The article also considers other factors which may have contributed to the rising chorus of criticism directed against this approach.
