In rural Sri Lanka the homesteads of the poor are systematically located away from roadsides and thus from the view of the casual visitor. There is a spatial dimension to socio‐economic inequality which the external observer needs to consciously anticipate and investigate. Housing standards are a good proxy variable for income and wealth.
